Selecting a region changes the language and/or content on. As long as it situates the subject within an open area and gives them sufficient emptiness to interact with it, any photographer can use negative space to create stunning images. It can be street photography on a busy New York corner, portraits of posed professionals, or even product photography. Negative space photography can be food photography or fashion. Photos of emptiness can have any subject matter. Negative space photography is all about contrast and scale, and a skilled photographer can achieve that effect with bokeh or other effects that turn part of the frame into a blurry negative space and another part into a sharply defined subject. Shallow depth of field can create a blurred background for your main focus to pop against, and the right photography composition can turn any setting into a negative space that grabs the viewer’s attention. There are all kinds of negative spaces waiting to be discovered.” Negative space can even be something added by the manipulation of camera settings. A landscape photo with a single figure in the distance that gives a sense of scale and loneliness is an example of negative space photography. A good rule of thumb is that the amount of negative space should take up at least 50% of the photo to achieve the right effect. Regardless of your focal point or subject, the space around it needs to be impossible to miss. “You always want the space to steal the show,” says photographer Petecia Le Fawnhawk-Maggiori. “You have your focal point and very few other elements on the page.” That focal point or main subject is the “positive space,” and the rest of the frame, be it a blank sky or the studio's white space, is the negative space. “It’s minimalism in photographic form,” says photographer Will Milne. “If the model or the performer is the noun,” says photographer Jimmy Marble, “the negative space is the adjective.” Essentially, that emptiness (in whatever form it takes) gives definition and emphasis to the subject. So, although the viewer’s eyes may focuson a central figure, they can’t help but notice the large section of emptiness that surrounds anddefines that figure. For this I would suggest setting your camera dial to the ‘aperture priority mode’ (AV on canon and Sony or just A for Nikon) and dropping the f-number as low as possible.Negative space photography is related to minimalist photography. It emphasizes not just the subject but also the empty space around the subject. The basic step involved is to make your aperture as wide as possible. In this case, it is helpful (but not entirely necessary) to have a basic understanding of the exposure triangle, and the three key controls used to expose an image correctly – ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture. This goal is a whole lot more achievable with far less thought and effort, and is the reason that many people still go out and purchase a DSLR or a Mirrorless DSLR option instead of just relying on their phone camera. You achieve this in the same way by tapping on the subject that is close, and therefore compressing and sending the background out of focus. A good example of this might be a photograph of someone at the beach. If you wanted to take a portrait photo of a person or persons, you would need to have a very long distance between the subject and the background you want to have the bokeh effect on while taking the image relatively close to the person (just a few feet away from them). The trick is that you tap the subject to make the camera focus on the subject up close which will send the background out of focus. There is however, a way to push any camera phone to show some kind of bokeh effect, but it is generally either when taking close up (also known as macro photography) type shots where there is a good distance between the subject and the background (a few feet). In some instances it can be very convincing, but a trained eye can spot it in an instant, particularly when there are objects that are relatively level with the subject that become blurred out due to the software algorithm. If this is the case, there is a fair chance you can first of all use the camera app feature called ‘portrait mode’ to emulate or fake the bokeh effect. Maybe a recent iPhone release or an android option. OK, so I am going to assume you have a modern phone here. The aperture is a group of several blades which form a circle or octagon through which the light passes to the sensor. There are actually a few ways to get the most bokeh you can out of the camera and lens that you have. The first rule to better bokeh is to determine proper depth-of-field rather than always choosing the blurriest background available. Experimenting with different photographic techniques is where you really begin to learn how to take great photos every time. So how do I take a photograph with some sweet sweet bokeh?
